- March 8 - The British House of Lords passes the Stamp Act to tax the American colonies.
- March 9 - After a public campaign by the writer Voltaire, judges in Paris posthumously exonerate Jean Calas of murdering his son. Calas had been tortured and executed in 1762 on the charge, though his son had actually committed suicide.
- March 22 - The Parliament of Great Britain passes the Stamp Act, which introduced a tax to be levied directly on its American colonies.
- March 24 - American Revolutionary War: The Kingdom of Great Britain passes the Quartering Act that requires the Thirteen Colonies to house British troops.
- May 18 - Fire destroys a large part of Montreal, Quebec.
- September 21 - Antoine de Beauterne announces he had killed the Beast of Gévaudan, but was later proved wrong by more attacks.
